Vice President of Product Engineering

The Opportunity:

Shutterfly, Inc. is a company poised for the next big step in its evolution. This Vice President of Product Engineering (VPPE) role is one of the most critical roles for the company going forward because our products and services are world class, and we are growing very fast to serve our customers. This is about being a strong engineering leader who understands how to build and ship world class software for products in the online service industry. This VPPE will partner with cross functional teams and take a visible role with partners as we build out the product and service strategy. The trajectory for the company is very good, and we have been profitable for 3 consecutive years.

The new VPPE takes over a very accomplished team of 21 engineers and a budget to hire an additional 16 engineers by the end of the year. The team is responsible for all Product Specific development, all Ecommerce and Funnel related development, all UI related elements, Partnership development, and Project Management. The VPPE will work very closely with the other groups in the Technology organization, which includes Platform Engineering, Client Engineering, Services Engineering, and Internet Operations.

Responsibilities:

  • Take ownership of the Product Engineering organization and drive results, add strategic input and participate to help provide direction for company strategy, working closely with Product Management and Marketing.
  • Collaborate with the Business development team to understand Partner requirements and drive technologies that will enable more partnerships.
  • Lead the development of web-based products and services, drive and enforce all architectural and design directions and decisions
  • Lead, motivate and manage a strong team of 21 engineers
  • Recruit world class engineers to the team in all areas and build a strong collaborative team environment
  • Go deep into the technology with these engineers and bring vision and experience to their decisions and practices
  • Build – and ensure compliance with — best-in-class organizational practices in the areas of people management, product design, implementation and ongoing maintenance
  • Work very closely with Product Management and Product Marketing organizations to prioritize and define future product directions
  • Leverage your technical depth and breadth as a partner of Marketing and Business development organizations to ensure that released products and services will provide a rich and valuable customer experience.
  • Drive and provide leadership in the review of existing technology and solutions and determine appropriate strategy for architecture
  • Deliver 100% compliance with defined schedules, quality metrics and project budgets

Experience:

  • A proven history of driving and delivering products in a service oriented e-commerce company, producing an excellent customer experience
  • Track record in leading and scaling a team in a fast growth company.
  • Successful track record developing and delivering large, scalable web applications on time and within budget
  • Experience in managing and growing software development teams from 20 engineers and up, recruiting expert talent, retaining best people, and creating a culture that inspires engineers to innovate
  • A track record of delivering products and services that have proven themselves successful in the field through supportability, ease-of-use, and customer satisfaction
  • A consistent record of success in schedule adherence, budget compliance, product quality and employee retention
  • A minimum of 10 years in software management, including at least 2 years in the VP role or 4 years in the Sr. Director role
  • Experience in managing an off-shore development team a plus

Education:

  • BS in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering; MS and/or MBA highly desired
