Creative Lead (manager) | Design Content

Shutterfly’s Creative Group is responsible for the visual and written expression of the Shutterfly brand. This ranges from the presentation layer of the website, to the merchandising and marketing collateral. We design and direct the onsite marketing and merchandising, from promos to category portal pages. We work closely with the Product Management and User Experience groups on product development projects to assure functionality, consistency and efficiency of the site. We also produce print pieces such as brochures, mailers, posters, and of course logos. And we develop the style and design content of the thoughtful products that customers make with Shutterfly.

The Creative Lead is a manager of people and a director of the design style that makes Shutterfly a premium brand. A creative lead develops the guidance that informs all creative development in an area of expertise. As an expert-level individual contributor the creative lead’s “hands on” design work is important, but more important is their ability to formulate and communicate “on brand” creative strategies. The creative lead knows the e-commerce business and can articulate by thought, word and design, the rationale and business logic behind each design.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop design strategies to direct the development of design content (the look and feel of our photo books, cards, calendars and collage posters)
  • Manage 4-6 designers, set quarterly goals, review performance on a quarterly basis, coach their career advancement
  • Lead a team of 4 designers dedicated to the development of a full roadmap of design content for multiple form factors
  • Design direct the work of external designers and design groups who will contribute to the overall portfolio of design content for Shutterfly
  • Create communication and design standards for the design content group and cross-functional design content team

Qualifications:

  • Can communicate how their creative leadership drives business objectives.
  • Leads brainstorms and high-concept meetings to develop innovative designs.
  • Is able to work well collaboratively in a team environment, and is able to take direction from Creative Director.
  • Is self-directed and can manage oversight on the projects and campaigns of their team.
  • Possesses expert knowledge of computers and the Internet—including both PC and Macintosh platforms. We seek designers who are well versed in all applications for the creation of graphic design for the Internet. These may include, but are not limited to: Adobe PhotoShop, Illustrator, In-Design, ImageReady, Macromedia Fireworks, and have an understanding of the basics of HTML and the requirements that HTML places upon design. The senior designer can mentor others on enhanced use of tools.
  • Has a command of the creative requirements of marketing communications including: advertising, print collateral, logo development, and interactive multimedia. They posses expertise in design for the web.
  • Knows the Shutterfly user experience completely to enhance the user experience.
  • Has 2+ years of management experience of 2 or more direct reports
  • Has a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design from a 4-year University or College of Art or equivalent and 5-6+ years work experience in this or a related field.
  • Has experience working as a creative lead at an ad agency, web design firm, online company or a design shop.
