Editorial Manager
This is a great opportunity to join the Creative team at Shutterfly and play a key role in defining a successful, growing brand. Shutterfly is the leading Internet-based social expression and personal publishing service that enables consumers to share, print, and preserve their memories. The Editorial Manger will lead the strategic development of our voice and tone, and oversee a group of talented writers to inspire an audience who are driven to express themselves through photography.
The Editorial Manager will be responsible for concept and oversight on all marketing materials—including the Shutterfly site, emails, direct mail, ads, packaging, flyers, brochures, exhibits and other marketing communications. The Editorial Manager will work collaboratively with creative management (Creative Director and Creative Leads) and a team of graphic designers to support marketing initiatives.
This is a manager role with direct reports. You will be responsible for setting periodic goals for your team, and reviewing their performance, as part of your management of their projects and careers.
The Editorial Manager must be versatile in many different types of communications and possess the ability to develop the guides and examples that produce on-brand copy, while moving quickly and comfortably between multiple projects. Responsibilities:
* Sets strategic direction on Editorial Voice and Tone
* Produces and evangelizes Editorial Style Guide
* Owns our “language basics” – how we talk about our products and services
* Tutors the marketing department in basics, evangelizes basics to brand partners
* Collaborates with Go-to-Market Managers on new-product language
* Collaborates with Creative Lead and Creative Director on high level copy direction
* Manages editorial direction, execution and QA
* In-house translations of agency generated creative direction
* Set guidelines for major partnerships—generating style guides for internal/external creative
* Manages division of labor and project prioritization (collaboratively with Creative Team Coordinator, project requestors, PMs) to assign writers to projects
* Develops language “proofing” and testing on a regular basis in association with our Customer Insights team
* Oversees hiring and manages editorial staff
* Organizes weekly staff meetings, conduct 1:1s with 2 direct reports
* Lead writer for highest-profile projects and strategy setting language decisions
* Provides consulting support, as necessary, to support style, voice and tone, and innovation
* Ongoing evaluation of the effectiveness of department output
Qualifications:
* The successful candidate will have the following experience or knowledge in the following areas:
* At least 4 years as a full-time copywriter, preferably in an agency, retail, product manufacturer or packaged goods environment
* At least 2 years as an editor and manager of an editorial team
* A history of strategic copy development, including style guides, use case documentation and voice and tone references
* A demonstrated aptitude for consumer e-commerce and technology
* Strong project management skills
* Ability to supervise copy across variety of mediums
* Flexibility, adaptability and excellent interpersonal skills required
* Must possess strong presentation skills, along with the ability to generate concepts that support marketing strategies (i.e., creative with concepts, clear and concise messaging)
* Must be motivated, highly organized, flexible, detail-oriented and possess excellent project management and communication skills
* Must be flexible during peak workload periods
* Bachelor’s degree or equivalent required
