Shutterfly Finance Manager – Technology & Development

This newly created Finance Manager position will report to the Director of Corporate Financial Planning and Analysis, but will be embedded within Shutterfly’s Technology and Development team that consists of five departments (Internet Operations, Platform Engineering, Product Engineering, Q&A and IT,). The position will partner closely with the Technology department leadership to develop forecasts and track/analyze historical expenditures and trends. Additionally, this person will be responsible for presenting key business insights and recommendations to the Finance team and individual departments. Shutterfly has a significant number of software engineers and the position will work closely with the engineering team leadership to develop long run forecasts of project engineering costs that qualify for capitalization under SOP 98-1. Additionally, Shutterfly has a significant hardware cost component for the website operations and online photo storage and this position will be responsible for partnering with the Internet Operations team to develop long term storage and infrastructure cost models. The position will have a dotted line reporting relationship to the SVP of Technology and currently is an individual contributor.

Responsibilities include:

  • Partnering with the Technology teams to create department level annual expense budgets and quarterly forecasts
  • Developing and reporting weekly on operating results to Technology and Finance management teams and help propose necessary actions to correct course if not meeting goals
  • Preparing monthly budget vs. actual variance analyses for the Technology departments
  • Working closely with the Technology departments to provide operational analysis and reporting
  • Develop, monitor and report on operational metrics and drive process to improve consistent productivity and efficiency improvement
  • Building and maintaining cost capitalization model under SOP 98-1 for internally developed software development costs
  • Performing ad hoc financial analysis to support business decisions including investment in long term capital assets
  • Evaluating digital photo storage costs and developing/maintaining model for future photo storage and related hardware requirements
  • Forecasting and maintaining the actual results for capitalized research and development costs
  • Quantifying the financial impact of website downtime and network outages
  • Other ad hoc projects

Experience & Requirements:

  • B.S. degree in finance or accounting; MBA preferred
  • 6-8 years of financial planning and analysis experience in a large growth company
  • Experience should include reporting responsibilities and analytical projects
  • Excellent excel skills assumed
  • Systems savvy - Experience with Oracle and Cognos is a plus
  • Strong communication and relationship building skills with the ability to interpret and summarize data to aid management in achieving strategic and operational goals
  • Able to work in a fast pace, high-growth environment
  • Keen interest software development and cutting edge hardware technologies
