    How to create Snapbooks

Q: What are Snapbooks?
A: Snapbooks are mini-albums of your favorite pictures. They are a great way to make a keepsake collection of pictures from a birthday, wedding, or other occasion. They make great gifts!

The pages are printed on real glossy photo paper, and you can add captions and titles to the front of your Snapbook pages. We also offer Snapbook Express, which is designed as quick way to create a pictures only Snapbook with an optional title page. Each Snapbook can have up to 50 pages.

Snapbooks come spiral-bound. They are protected by a clear plastic (matte finish) cover.

Q: What resolution should my images be? What does it mean if the image for my Snapbook is "not recommended"?
A: Image resolution depends on the size of the Snapbook. For a 4x6 size Snapbook, we recommend a minmum resolution of 1024x768. For a 5x7 Snapbook, we recommend a minmum resolution of 1152x864. If you receive a "not recommended" warning, then the resolution of your image is too low for the Snapbook.

(Please note that our recommendations are based ONLY on the overall resolution of your picture, and not on the overall quality or clarity of the original picture. We recommend that customers use as little image compression as possible. Also, we are not and cannot be responsible for the original picture being blurry or out-of-focus, even if there is sufficient resolution to be 'recommended'.)

Pictures that fall below our recommended resolution guidelines may look okay when viewed online, but will appear blurry and pixelated -- that is, the image will appear blocky, with jagged rather than straight edges -- when enlarged and printed.

To check the resolution of your pictures once you have transferred them to Shutterfly, go to the View page and click on the thumbnail image; you will then see a larger version of the picture, with recommended print sizes. Above these, hold your cursor over the lowercase 'i'. Among the information displayed you will find the resolution.

Q: How are Snapbooks bound? How many pages can they have?
A: Snapbook pages are printed on the same high-quality photographic paper we use for Shutterfly prints. They are bound with a clear plastic spiral. The front and back covers are of a sturdy protective plastic, with a matte finish.

Snapbooks can have up to 50 pages each. (This is the maximum that the size of the binding can permit. If you want more images for your Snapbook, you can order additional Snapbook(s) for the excess pictures.)

Q: What customizable options do I have?
A: You can customize your Snapbook in many ways!

For any Snapbook, you can do all of these things:

  • choose 4×6 or 5×7 sized pages
  • choose from eight different Snapbook styles - Classic, Elegant, Fun, Blue Checks, Pink Checks, Garland, Travel, or Party - or you can create a Snapbook without these styles, using just the pictures.
  • choose any number of pictures to be in it (up to 50)
  • choose which picture will be the title page
  • choose the sequence of pictures in the Snapbook

And for Snapbooks using one of the eight styles - you can add captions that appear on the page with your picture. You can also choose whether your Snapbook will have all the captions displayed below, or to the side of your pictures.

Each picture in your Snapbook can be cropped and can be rotated to the left, right, or 180 degrees. And each picture can be used with our effects (such as soft focus or black & white settings).

Note that some of the styles include a matching border. This border will be applied to the entire Snapbook if you choose that style; and may result in the actual size of the picture being less than the Snapbook size you choose (4×6 or 5×7). Snapbooks created using the 'Pictures only' style will have the maximum possible picture size on the paper.

Q: Can I make one with no border/captions?
A: You can make a Snapbook that has just by using our Snapbook Express ordering path. This allows you to create a pictures only Snapbook with optional title page. Snapbooks created using this style will have the maximum possible picture size on the paper.

You can also use one of the Snapbook styles (Classic, Elegant, Fun, Blue Checks, Pink Checks, Garland, Travel, or Party) but with no captions.

Note that some of the styles include a matching border. This border will be applied to the entire Snapbook if you choose that style; and may result in the actual size of the picture being less than the Snapbook size you choose (4×6 or 5×7).

Q: Can I use Shutterfly borders and effects with Snapbooks?
A: You can indeed use effects such as our color toning, cropping, and red-eye fixing with Snapbooks.

If you wish to use other Shutterfly borders with Snapbooks, please note that the other borders will only be printed if you use the 'Pictures only' Snapbook option. (If you use of of the other themed styles - Classic, Elegant, Fun, Blue Checks, Pink Checks, Garland, Travel, or Party - then the pages will be printed with the appropriate theme rather than with the Shutterfly border.)

Q: What happens if I use a picture that already has a border?
A: The border will or will not be used, depending upon which Snapbook style will be used.

If you use one of the eight Snapbook styles then the pages in your Snapbook will NOT be printed with a regular border - they will be printed with the style.

If you use the 'Pictures only' option for your Snapbook, then the pages can be printed using a Shutterfly border. If you have already added a border, they will be printed with this border; and during the Snapbook creation process, you can edit or remove borders.

Q: Can I save a Snapbook that I'm not finished with?
A: With Snapbooks, Shutterfly offers a feature whereby an incomplete Snapbook is automatically saved while in progress. You can come back later - even after turning off your computer, or from a different machine - and complete your Snapbook. Please note that only the current Snapbook is saved. If you cancel the Snapbook, then it is not saved.

To resume working on a saved Snapbook, sign in to your account, and go to the Snapbook creation page. There you will see a note that says you have a Snapbook in progress, and a link that allows you to edit your current Snapbook.

For more information about our 'Save project' feature, please go to our Projects help page.

Q: Are the pages prints or paper?
A: Snapbook pages (including the title page) are printed the same way we print our regular prints: on top-quality Fuji Crystal Archive photo paper, using a wet chemical process similar to that found in traditional photofinishing labs.

Note that Snapbook pages do NOT have the backprinting that our normal prints have. (If you wish to caption your Snapbook photos, you can have the caption printed on the front.) The back of your Snapbook pages will be completely blank.

Q: Are free promo prints applied to Snapbooks?
A: Snapbooks are a different product than prints, so therefore promotional prints cannot be used to purchase Snapbooks. However, we do continue to run Snapbook promotions throughout the year, so keep your eyes open!
