Slice of Life: Kids Were Here...

A Daily Treasure Hunt

Self-taught photographer Jessica Deane believes that pictures tell stories.  The mother of three has a gift for capturing the beauty in everyday life. These are her images and her words
.

I took this project on with photographer friends of mine. The goal was to capture something about my children without them being in the image.  This wasn't the easiest challenge because I'm such a clean freak. It was hard to grab the camera and find humor in things I'd usually rush to straighten up. As time went on, I started to enjoy it. It became a treasure hunt during the day. What will they do today?  What will I find? I look back at the pictures now and they bring me such joy. I will always have these images to document the little things the kids left behind at that stage of their lives. Little pieces of them..captured forever.

Spilled Cereal

It's something that happens often. This image tells me that an independent 2-year-old lives here.

Breyer Models

My daughter collects these. my daughter collects them. This image will never let me forget how my 11-year-old would go up in her room and play for hours with her horses.

Growth Chart

It started when we moved in. This doorway serves as a constant reminder of how much my babies have grown. Time really is flying by.

Cleats

They are always by the back door.  I will never forget the amount of hours my son spent this summer in the backyard playing baseball.

Her Buggy

This image and the scratches on the floor will never let me forget how my youngest would fly around the house on her buggy.

The Last Crib

My last baby. My last crib.  I never want to forget every detail.  For the record, she's still in it.  I just can't let go yet.

Scattered

I pick up the toys in these baskets under the coffee table hourly.  Somehow everything manages to find its way back out.

Mr. Grasshead

My son made this in first grade. Mr. Grasshead's sporting the mohawk hair cut I gave him.  He lived by my kitchen sink for the longest time... until he finally died.  I sure miss him.

The Red Car

This car is very special its been through two of my babies now.  The hours of play this thing has endured is amazing.  I will never forget all these details — they are irreplaceable to me.  Each and every image will never let me forget...that kids were here.
