Shooting People: Street Photography

Dig it

Travis Jensen appreciates photography of all forms, but is particularly attracted to candid street scenes and portraiture. Jensen is the co-author of two photo journals and a member of All City SF, a photo blog that focuses on capturing the most beautiful, gritty and thought provoking aspects of the Bay Area, with the occasional documentation of travels throughout the country and across the pond.  These are his thoughts on the craft.

Young Retro

Up until I discovered photography, it felt like there was something missing in my life, an emptiness of sorts. Photography was the missing component.

Posted Up on the Block

I’m absolutely obsessed with shooting photos, and I never, ever leave the house without a camera in my bag.

Fear the Beard

There’s nothing I like more than lurking the streets of San Francisco with a camera, vibing out on the different scenes, meeting new people and putting myself out there.

Larissa

I’m not out here trying to shoot postcard images, but rather document real people and real life happenings.

I Haven't Told Anyone Until Now

I love people, the process of engagement, and as odd as this may sound, I enjoy putting myself in uncomfortable situations.  Uncomfortable situations help build character.

Mission District

When it comes to shooting people, I think the best approach is to just be honest and sincere. Approach an individual you find interesting, introduce yourself, tell them that you’re a photographer, listen to them (not too many people are good listeners), and ask if you can take a few shots. This approach seems to work well for me.

Carnaval Sidelines

Though I'm a fan of engaging people for photos, sometimes, let's say when you witness a beautiful scene unfolding in front of you, you just have to shoot first and ask later.

North Beach Bohemian

You have to be mindful of the light.  Light can make or break a photo.  Also, good light can turn what would be an otherwise uninteresting subject into a masterpiece. I’ve seen photographs of grimy garbage cans look like majestic shrines under the right light.

On what makes a story...

An image that’s provocative and doesn’t have all the answers supplied.

SF Pride Parade Sidelines

Hopefully I won’t be remembered for just one good image, but rather a handful!
