Use Natural Light
I always say, you can't compete with the light God created. Natural light is always best for any photo. If you can't go outside, just find a room that is well lit by natural light or shoot by a window. Using flash looks "fake" and often scares the pet. Nowadays, cameras have the availability to shoot in low light with ease so it shouldn't be too difficult.

A favorite treat or toy can be helpful if you are shooting a portrait and need to get the pet's attention or to have the pet look into the camera. Also, make sure to take tons of photos of your pet when they are puppies or when you first get them.
