New name. New home. New life.

You’re married. Congratulations. The wedding planning is over, and your honeymoon was a blast. Now that you’re back home, it’s time for a little housekeeping.

Just married. Shout the news.

If you had an intimate reception with close friends and family but still want to let everyone know that you got married, send a wedding announcement card.

Going from maiden to married? How to change your last name.

Some women prefer to keep their last name, others hyphenate and others take on their husband’s last name. If you decide to change your name, follow this checklist to make sure you have all bases covered.

The Miss to Mrs. Checklist

Obtain a certified copy of your marriage license from the marriage license office.

Contact Social Security at 800.772.1213 (once you have your marriage license in hand).

Head down to the DMV (once you have your new social security card and your certified marriage license).

Ask your employer’s HR department to change your name. This is not only important for emails but also your paycheck.

Change your name on your car registration, auto, health and life insurance policies, alumni associations, voter registration, bank accounts, checks, membership and credit cards. Write one letter with your information on it, including your name, address, new name and the appropriate account numbers.

Call your phone, utility and mortgage companies to update their records.

Update your passport.

Shop for new calling cards, personal stationery and thank you cards to let friends and family know you’ve changed your name.

New love nest. Send moving announcements.

You’ve moved into your new home together. First things first. Go to your local post office and sign up for mail forwarding. Then, make sure you update your address on your credit cards, insurance records and other important documents. Next, let friends and family know that you’ve moved and give them your new address.

Choose from a variety of stylish moving announcements. But before you lick that envelope, make sure you’ve got updated mailing address labels as well.
