Tips for Planning a Simple Wedding Menu

Much of what you choose to include on your wedding menu will depend on the venue or catering company you’ve chosen. If you plan to set up a buffet at your reception, a menu is probably not necessary. However, if you’d like some inspiration for more formal, sit-down dinner ideas, here are a few tips to keep in mind when it comes to planning your menu:

  • Offer 2-3 entrée choices. You can certainly offer just one if you’re dealing with a smaller number of guests and you’re sure there are no dietary restrictions, but a few options gives your guests the best chance of enjoying their meal (and, as a result, your reception). You might offer a chicken or seafood meal, a gluten-free steak meal and a vegetarian or vegan entrée to make sure everyone is accommodated.
  • Choose seasonal ingredients. Your food will taste fresher if you cater your menu around seasonal produce and locally-sourced items.
  • Don’t forget about yourselves. In the hubbub of wedding planning, it can sometimes be difficult to remember that this day is for you, the bride and groom. Make sure you’re taking your own food preferences into account and serving a meal you will both love—not just something that has mass appeal for your guests.

Keep the reception time in mind. It’s probably not a good idea to plan an 8pm reception if you want to serve a full meal. If you’re just planning to serve hors-d'oeuvres and drinks, a late reception is great, but if you’re serving dinner, serve it at a reasonable dinner time.
