You have read the book a hundred times, with your little one giggling as the growing list of snacks gets nibbled. Build on your child’s love for this classic children’s book by planning a birthday party around the theme of Hungry Little Caterpillar.
Order invitations early so you can customize them just the way you would like, including details of the party along with the theme. You can personalize the 3rd birthday invitations with a photo of you own sweet little caterpillar surrounded by a splash of color.
Bake or order six small round cakes, icing each of them a different, vibrant hue. Or, you can stay true to the book by decorating the first with red for the head and the rest of the cakes in green for the body. With a little dollop each of yellow and green icing, you can easily create eyes. Add black string licorice for the antennae, a gum drop for the nose, and a curved strand of red licorice for the smile.
Include a snack table inspired directly from the book. Throughout the week, the little caterpillar ate through a variety of fruits, greens and sweets, giving you plenty of options from which to choose. Include a fruit try to represent the weekdays, complete with oranges, strawberries, plums, pears and apples. For Saturday’s fare, present a plate of Swiss cheese, salami and sausage, garnished with pickles, along with a platter of sliced watermelon and small cherry pie bites. Finish with a salad to represent Sunday’s green leaf. The chocolate cake and ice cream can be incorporated into the birthday cake portion of the party, and the cupcake can be a “smash” cake, set aside for the guest of honor. Tie a ribbon around individual lollipops and send them home as favors.
Stick with the literature theme with a suggestion on the 3rd birthday invitations for presents in the realm of classic children’s books. In addition to lots of quality reading with your little one, you just might be inspired for next year’s celebration!
