How to Make a DIY Father’s Day Card

Whether you’re looking to make a thoughtful card or gift for your dad, stepdad, grandpa, uncle, husband or another important father figure in your life, a custom Father’s Day card is the way to go. With our Upload Your Own Design feature, we make it easy to create a heartfelt, beautiful DIY Father’s Day card featuring your own unique design.

Not sure how to get started? We’ll guide you through the process and provide some creative ideas for making the perfect card for Dad.

Father’s Day Card Ideas

If you’d like to design your own Father’s Day card, chances are that many of the generic card designs you see in stores don’t really suit your dad’s style, personality or interests. Creating your own personalized card with Shutterfly is a sure way to give a professional touch to your unique design. Here are just a few design ideas for inspiration:

  • Dad Puns: From sweet and simple food puns like “Olive you, Dad” or “Dad, you can’t be BEET!” to “Happy Father’s Day to the coolest pop” (featuring a popsicle illustration), your dad is sure to get a kick out of a silly pun.
  • Sentimental Sayings: Bring a tear to Dad’s eye with sentimental sayings like, “Any man can be a father. It takes someone special to be a Dad.”
  • From the Kids: Help your little ones make an extra-special card for their dad. Ask each of your kids what they love best about Dad, and include their answers in the card to bring a smile to his face.

How to Upload Your Own Design

Whether you want to design your card with Shutterfly or upload a completely original design for us to print, you have full creative freedom with this DIY option. Follow the steps below to make a card that’s thoughtful, beautiful and memorable.

To Upload an Original Design: If you’ve created your own design in another program, all you need to do is upload it as an image, then tweak your card format to fit. Do the same for the back of the card. Don’t forget to select a trim option.

To Design it Yourself with Shutterfly: This option requires just a few easy steps to achieve a perfectly personalized Father’s Day card that’s made from the heart:

  1. Check the default formatting options to make sure you’ve selected the card size, cardstock type and trim style you want.
  2. Choose from vertical and horizontal layouts and determine the number of photos you want to display on the front of the card, from 1-13.
  3. Choose whether you want to add text to the front of your card or not. If you do, click in each gray text box to enter your message and customize the font, color and text size.
  4. Repeat steps 2 & 3 for the back side of your card.
  5. Once you’re satisfied with the design of your Father’s Day card, move to the next phase of the design process: envelope customization. Choose from several envelope colors and optional additions like slip-in liners.
  6. Finally, choose whether you want to address and mail the card yourself or whether you’d like us to take care of it for you.
  7. Add the final product to your cart!
