Father’s Day

Father’s Day

Father’s Day is a global holiday celebrating fatherhood and paternity. In the U.S., Father’s Day originated in 1909 and is celebrated every year on the third Sunday in June. Father’s Day is very similar to Mother’s Day and includes gift-giving, family get-togethers, and community celebrations.

When Is Father’s Day?

The date for Father’s Day changes every year since it’s on the third Sunday every June. Father’s Day 2020 was on Sunday, June 21, and Father’s Day 2021 will be on Sunday, June 20.

Worldwide, Father’s Day has different dates, though most countries also celebrate in May or June. In the U.S., Father’s Day isn’t a public holiday, so business and organizations are open as usual. Since Father’s Day is on a Sunday, it’s usually celebrated through close family time and small traditions.

Father’s Day History

Father’s Day originated in 1909 after Mother’s Day when Sonora Smart Dodd decided to create a similar celebration to the first Mother’s Day she heard about in the same year. Dodd’s father was a single Civil War veteran who raised Sonora and her five siblings on his own, so Dodd wanted to honor him. She initially proposed for the holiday to be on her father’s birthday in early June, but it was pushed to the third Sunday in June.

Father’s Day Celebrations

Most families celebrate Father’s Day through small get-togethers. If you’re away from your family, you can always send Father’s Day cards to show your appreciation. A happy Father’s Day might consist of going to see a movie, cooking food together, or finding time to connect over the phone.

Other Father’s Day ideas include homemade crafts with the kids or attending a neighborhood celebration. Many schools tend to put together Father’s Day programs where kids put on a brief performance for parents and families.

Choosing the Best Father’s Day Gifts

The best gift you can give is always to be able to spend time together through Father’s Day activities. Small kids can spend the day creating Father’s Day crafts that make for memorable and heartwarming DIY gifts.

If you can’t spend time together, show you care by sending heartfelt Father’s Day messages in cards and unique gifts. Consider printing some of your favorite photo memories together to send to dad – it’ll be sure to make him smile.
