Holiday Photo Card Paper Types

Common holiday photo card finishes include matte, glossy, and textured. Matte offers a smooth, low-sheen look, glossy adds shine, and textured paper brings a tactile element to the design. These finishes can give the same holiday photos and greeting a different overall feel.

Matte paper has a subdued finish with less reflection, making it a complementary choice for understated holiday designs. Glossy paper has a reflective surface that can make colors appear more vivid. Choose based on whether you prefer a soft, muted presentation or a bright, polished look.

Textured paper adds visual depth and a distinctive feel to holiday photo cards. It pairs well with simple layouts, classic typography, and illustrations. If your design centers on detailed photography, a smoother surface may let those fine details take more of the spotlight.

An uncoated writing surface generally accepts pen ink more readily than a glossy coating. If you plan to add a personal holiday message, consider the finish on the side where you’ll write—not just the photo side. Let the ink dry fully before stacking your cards.

Photo paper is designed primarily for photographic presentation, while cardstock gives a greeting card a more substantial, structured feel. Cardstock can have different coatings and textures, so it is not always matte. When choosing holiday photo card paper, consider both the photo finish and how you want the card to feel in hand.
