Planning a wedding comes with a lot of decisions, but you don’t need to make all of them at once. The easiest way to stay organized is to work backward from your wedding date, focusing first on the decisions that affect everything else, like your budget, guest count, venue, and key vendors.

This wedding planning checklist breaks the process into manageable stages, from the first few weeks of your engagement through the wedding day and beyond. Use it as a starting point and adjust the timing to fit your celebration. A destination wedding, shorter engagement, or highly sought-after venue may require you to tackle certain tasks earlier.

12+ Months Before the Wedding

If you have a year or more to plan, start with the decisions that will shape the rest of your wedding. You don’t need to know what every centerpiece will look like yet. At this stage, focus on your budget, approximate guest count, location, and priorities.

  • Set your wedding budget. Decide how much you’re comfortable spending, who will contribute, and which parts of the wedding matter most to you. Leave room for expenses that are easy to overlook, including taxes, gratuities, alterations, postage, transportation, and vendor fees.
  • Draft your guest list. You don’t need final names yet, but an estimated guest count will help you compare venues and build a realistic budget.
  • Choose a general date or season. Having a few possible dates gives you more flexibility when contacting venues and vendors.
  • Research and tour venues. Compare capacity, location, accessibility, what’s included in the rental, weather backup plans, and any restrictions on outside vendors.
  • Decide whether to hire a wedding planner. Depending on your budget and needs, you may choose a full-service planner, partial planner, month-of coordinator, or handle planning yourselves.
  • Start researching key vendors. Photographers, videographers, caterers, bands, DJs, and other in-demand vendors can book well in advance.
  • Choose your wedding party, if you’re having one.
  • Start thinking about your wedding style. Save colors, flowers, stationery, attire, venues, and décor you like. You don’t need a perfectly defined “theme.” A general sense of your style is enough to start making decisions that work together.
  • Take engagement photos. If you’re planning to use a photo on your save the dates, scheduling an engagement session early gives you plenty of time to choose your favorite image.

9–12 Months Before the Wedding

Dockside Moment Save The Date

Once your venue and date are confirmed, you can begin turning your ideas into actual plans. This is also when guests who will need to travel should start hearing from you.

  • Book your ceremony and reception venue.
  • Hire priority vendors. Confirm your photographer, videographer, caterer, entertainment, planner or coordinator, and any other professionals you don’t want to risk losing to another date.
  • Start shopping for wedding attire. Some dresses and made-to-order attire can take months to arrive, with additional time needed for alterations.
  • Create your wedding website. Include your date, location, travel information, accommodations, and other details guests may need. You can continue adding information as plans are finalized.
  • Create your registry. You can add to it over time, but having a registry ready is helpful before engagement parties and wedding showers begin.
  • Book hotel room blocks, if needed. This is especially useful if many guests are traveling or your wedding is in an area with limited accommodations.
  • Choose and send your save the dates. Give guests plenty of notice, especially for a destination wedding or a date that falls during a busy travel season. Shutterfly offers save the date cards and magnet in a range of styles, including photo designs that make it easy to use favorite shots from your engagement session. Include your names, wedding date, city and state or destination, and a note that a formal invitation will follow.
  • Begin honeymoon planning. If you’re traveling internationally, check passport expiration dates and destination entry requirements early.

6–9 Months Before the Wedding

With the biggest decisions made, turn your attention to the details that will shape the ceremony, reception, and guest experience.

  • Finalize your wedding colors and overall style.
  • Choose wedding-party attire. Give everyone enough time to order clothing, make alterations, and find accessories.
  • Book your florist. Discuss your bouquet, ceremony flowers, reception arrangements, and any installations you have in mind.
  • Reserve rentals. Depending on your venue, you may need tables, chairs, linens, dinnerware, tents, lounge furniture, lighting, or other rentals.
  • Plan transportation. Consider transportation for yourselves, your wedding party, and guests if venues, hotels, and parking areas are spread out.
  • Discuss your ceremony. Work with your officiant to begin outlining readings, traditions, music, vows, and the overall ceremony structure.
  • Plan the rehearsal dinner or welcome event. Decide who will host, where it will take place, and who will be invited.
  • Research wedding invitations. You don’t have to order them immediately, but this is a good time to decide what your invitation suite needs to include.

4–6 Months Before the Wedding

sunlit stripes design wedding invitation suite

This is when many of the details guests will actually see begin coming together. Your venue, schedule, and major logistics should be firm enough to finalize your wedding invitations.

  • Order your wedding invitations. Choose a design that works with your wedding style and double-check names, dates, times, venue information, and spelling before ordering.
  • Build your invitation suite. In addition to the main invitation, you may need RSVP cards and enclosure cards for accommodations, directions, reception details, or other information that doesn’t fit on the invitation itself.
  • Choose your envelopes and addressing. Shutterfly wedding invitations can be paired with custom envelopes and addressing options, helping you create a coordinated look while cutting down on the time it takes to prepare a large mailing.
  • Order extra invitations. A few extras can be useful for late additions, returned mail, keepsakes, and your photographer’s detail photos.
  • Order your wedding rings. Leave enough time for sizing, engraving, and any adjustments.
  • Finalize the menu and catering details.
  • Choose your wedding cake or dessert.
  • Schedule attire fittings.
  • Book your rehearsal dinner venue.
  • Reserve wedding-night accommodations.
  • Finalize honeymoon reservations and travel plans.
  • Plan wedding showers and pre-wedding celebrations. If you’re hosting or helping with the stationery, coordinate bridal shower invitations, bachelorette party invitations, or other party invitations with the event host.

2–3 Months Before the Wedding

Now it’s time to get important information into your guests’ hands and start preparing the details you’ll need once RSVPs arrive.

  • Mail your wedding invitations. Before mailing the full batch, check postage requirements for your complete invitation suite, especially if you’ve added enclosure cards or other pieces.
  • Keep your guest list organized. Track invitations, responses, meal selections, plus-ones, dietary needs, and other guest information in one place.
  • Send rehearsal dinner invitations. Give invited guests enough notice to include the event in their wedding-weekend plans.
  • Write your vows. Starting early gives you time to revise without trying to find the right words the night before your wedding.
  • Schedule hair and makeup trials.
  • Finalize flowers and décor.
  • Confirm transportation plans.
  • Choose gifts for your wedding party, parents, or anyone else you’d like to thank.
  • Start your wedding-day timeline. Work with your planner, photographer, venue, and other vendors to map out getting ready, photos, the ceremony, cocktail hour, reception events, and transportation.
  • Begin planning your ceremony and reception stationery. Think about which printed pieces your guests will actually need, such as wedding programs, menu cards, place cards, table numbers, and wedding signs.

1–2 Months Before the Wedding

Your guest count is taking shape, which means you can finalize many of the details that depend on who will be attending.

  • Follow up on missing RSVPs.
  • Create your seating chart. Wait until most responses are in before assigning tables.
  • Finalize the ceremony. Confirm readings, vows, music, procession order, and any cultural or religious traditions.
  • Order wedding programs. Include the ceremony order and any other information you’d like guests to have, such as wedding-party names, readings, or a short note of thanks.
  • Order reception menus. Individual or table menu cards can help guests know what will be served and can coordinate with the rest of your wedding stationery.
  • Order place cards and table numbers. Once your seating arrangement is nearly final, these pieces can help guests move easily from the seating chart to their assigned table and seat.
  • Order your wedding signs. Think through the signs guests will need as they move through the celebration, such as a welcome sign, seating chart, bar sign, or other directions and displays. Shutterfly wedding signs can be personalized to coordinate with your wedding colors, stationery, and décor.
  • Choose a wedding guest book. Give guests a place to leave their names, well wishes, and advice for the newlyweds. Shutterfly wedding guest books can be personalized with your names, wedding date, photos, and other details to create a keepsake you’ll want to look back on after the celebration.
  • Consider personalized wedding napkins. They can be used at the bar, cocktail hour, dessert table, or reception.
  • Apply for your marriage license. Requirements and validity periods vary by location, so check the rules where you’ll legally marry rather than assuming you can obtain it at any particular point.
  • Confirm final fittings.
  • Create a photo list. Tell your photographer about family combinations, meaningful details, or specific people and moments you don’t want missed.
  • Confirm vendor details. Review arrival times, setup needs, contact information, balances, and the final timeline.

2–4 Weeks Before the Wedding

At this point, avoid adding unnecessary projects. Focus on confirming what you’ve already planned and making sure everyone has the information they need.

  • Finalize your guest count. Give your caterer and venue their required final numbers by the deadline in your contract.
  • Finish the seating chart.
  • Finalize place cards and table assignments.
  • Share the wedding timeline. Send relevant versions to your wedding party, immediate family, vendors, and anyone responsible for setup or transportation.
  • Confirm the music. Give your DJ or band your must-play songs, do-not-play list, ceremony selections, and songs for major reception moments.
  • Confirm transportation and lodging details.
  • Prepare final vendor payments and gratuities.
  • Break in your wedding shoes.
  • Prepare an emergency kit. Include practical items such as stain remover, tissues, safety pins, pain reliever, fashion tape, bandages, and anything specific to your attire.
  • Pack for your honeymoon if you’re leaving soon after the wedding.
  • Pack wedding-day and overnight bags.

The Week of the Wedding

The major planning should be finished. Use this week to confirm logistics, hand off responsibilities, and give yourself room to enjoy what’s happening.

  • Check the weather and review your backup plan if needed.
  • Confirm final arrival times with vendors.
  • Deliver décor, stationery, favors, welcome items, or other supplies to the appropriate person or venue.
  • Assign a point person. Choose someone other than you or your partner who can answer vendor questions and handle small issues on the wedding day.
  • Rehearse the ceremony.
  • Attend your rehearsal dinner.
  • Give your marriage license to the appropriate person.
  • Steam and organize attire.
  • Make sure rings, vows, accessories, and important documents are accounted for.
  • Get some rest. There will always be one more tiny thing you could do. It probably doesn’t need to be done.

Your Wedding Day

The checklist gets much shorter now. You’ve already done the planning.

  • Eat and drink water while you’re getting ready.
  • Give yourself more time than you think you’ll need.
  • Keep your rings and marriage license with the people responsible for them.
  • Let your planner, coordinator, wedding party, or designated point person handle vendor questions.
  • Take a few minutes alone with your partner if you can.
  • Enjoy your guests, your ceremony, and the celebration you’ve spent months putting together.

Small changes to the schedule are normal. Your guests won’t know that dinner started ten minutes later than planned or that a flower arrangement wasn’t placed exactly where you expected. Once the day begins, the goal is no longer to plan the wedding. It’s to be there for it.

After the Wedding

There are still a few things to wrap up after the celebration, but these tasks can happen at a much more relaxed pace.

  • Return rentals and borrowed items.
  • Make sure final vendor payments have been completed.
  • Preserve your wedding attire, bouquet, or other keepsakes if desired.
  • Send wedding thank you cards. Keep a list of gifts as you receive them so writing your notes is easier. Personalized wedding thank you cards can coordinate with your invitation suite or feature a favorite wedding photo once your professional images arrive.
  • Share photos with family and friends.
  • Order your wedding album. Once you’ve received your full photo gallery, choose the images that best tell the story of the day. A wedding photo book can include everything from getting ready and detail shots to the ceremony, portraits, reception, and candid moments.
  • Print your favorite wedding photos. Framed prints, canvas prints, and other wall art can give some of your best images a place outside your phone or photo gallery.
  • Handle name-change paperwork, if applicable.
  • Enjoy being married. Your wedding was one day. You don’t need to finish every post-wedding task the moment it’s over.

Wedding Planning Checklist FAQs

How long does it take to plan a wedding?

Many couples spend about a year or more planning, but there is no required wedding-planning timeline. A shorter engagement is completely manageable if you’re flexible about venues and vendors and comfortable making decisions more quickly. For a destination wedding or a celebration involving highly sought-after venues and vendors, starting earlier can give you more options.

What should you plan first for a wedding?

Start with your budget, approximate guest count, preferred location, and possible dates. These decisions affect almost everything that follows, including which venues you can consider and how much you can spend per guest. Once you have a venue and confirmed date, you can begin booking vendors and sending save the dates.

When should you send save the dates?

Save the dates are commonly sent about 6 to 12 months before the wedding. Give guests more notice for destination weddings, holiday weekends, or celebrations that require significant travel. Everyone who receives a save the date should also receive a wedding invitation.

When should you order wedding invitations?

Plan to order wedding invitations several months before the wedding so you have time to personalize your design, review the details, receive your order, assemble your stationery, and address the envelopes. Shutterfly recommends finalizing and ordering invitations around four to six months before the wedding.

When should wedding invitations be mailed?

Wedding invitations are generally mailed about two to three months before the wedding. Sending them earlier can be helpful when many guests are traveling. Set your RSVP deadline based on when your venue and caterer need a final guest count, then leave yourself enough time to follow up with anyone who hasn’t responded.

What wedding stationery do you need?

The exact pieces depend on your celebration. Before the wedding, you may need save the dates, wedding invitations, RSVP cards, enclosure cards, and invitations for events such as the rehearsal dinner. Wedding-day stationery can include programs, menus, place cards, and table numbers. Afterward, wedding thank you cards help you thank guests for their attendance and gifts.

Final Thoughts on Planning Your Wedding

A wedding planning timeline is meant to make the process easier, not give you another set of deadlines to worry about. Some couples will book a photographer 14 months ahead, while others will find one four months before the wedding. Some will send save the dates a year in advance, while others may not need them at all.

Start with the decisions that affect the rest of your plans, give time-sensitive tasks plenty of room, and tackle the smaller details as your wedding gets closer. From your first save the date to your wedding invitations, day-of stationery, thank you cards, and wedding album, each piece can help tell a different part of the story while keeping guests informed along the way.

Planning your wedding RSVPs involves more decisions than most couples expect. Do you go printed, digital, or both? What wording actually gets people to respond on time? And what do you do about plus-ones? This guide covers all of it, with wording examples you can use as-is or adapt for your own style.

How to choose your RSVP format

Before you write a single word of copy, it helps to think through the format. The right choice depends on your guest list, your timeline, and how coordinated you want everything to look.

Some couples use a wedding website to collect RSVPs digitally, and that works fine for tech-comfortable guest lists. But if you want something your guests can hold, a printed card is the cleaner choice. It works for everyone on the list regardless of how comfortable they are with technology, and there is no link to find, no form to figure out, no question about whether grandma saw the email.

The real advantage of printed cards through Shutterfly is that they are part of your stationery set. Your RSVP card, wedding invitation, envelope liner, and details card all share the same design, typography, and paper stock. Everything arrives in one package and looks like it belongs together, which matters more than you might think when guests are holding it in their hands.

What to put on an RSVP card

sunlit stripes wedding rsvp card

You do not need to include everything. Here is what actually matters:

The RSVP deadline. Give guests a firm date and make it obvious. Write it out in full (“Please reply by August 15”) rather than a compressed format that is easy to overlook. Set your deadline two to three weeks before your final headcount is due to the caterer, not on the same day.

Names. A fill-in line for guest names cuts down on the guesswork when envelopes come back. If you need to track individual names for seating, include a line for each person.

Attendance confirmation. A simple accepts/declines format is fine. The wording is up to you, from formal (“accepts with pleasure”) to casual (“absolutely, see you there”).

Meal preference, if your venue requires it. Keep this clean, one line per person with clear checkbox options.

That is it. Everything else is optional, and simpler cards tend to come back more reliably than crowded ones.

RSVP deadline: how much lead time do you actually need?

Most caterers and venues need a final headcount somewhere between one and three weeks before the event. Work backwards from that deadline, then add another two to three weeks as buffer for late responders (there will always be late responders).

If your wedding is in October, for example, and your caterer needs numbers by October 1st, set your RSVP deadline in mid-September. Send invitations six to eight weeks before the deadline, which puts your mailing date in late July.

A note on timing: the earlier you send invitations, the more likely you are to get responses back before the deadline. Couples who mail invitations eight weeks out consistently report better response rates than those who wait until six weeks.

Managing plus-ones on your RSVP card

The clearest way to handle plus-ones is to address the outer envelope specifically. If a guest has been given a plus-one, write both names on the envelope. If they have not, address it to them alone.

That said, guests sometimes assume plus-ones where none were offered. A short fill-in line on the card (“Additional guest name, if applicable: ______”) gives you a way to track who is bringing whom without having an awkward conversation after the fact.

If you are concerned about uninvited guests, you can add a line like “We have reserved ___ seat(s) in your honor” with the number filled in by hand. It is a gentle, gracious way to set the expectation without making anyone feel called out.

FAQs

wedding invitation suite

What should an RSVP card include?

At minimum: an RSVP deadline, a fill-in line for the guest’s name, and a way to indicate attendance. Meal preference is worth adding if your caterer requires individual choices. Everything else, wording variations, additional fields, card size, is optional and depends on your preference.

What’s the difference between digital and printed RSVPs?

Printed RSVP cards are mailed back by guests and are part of your physical invitation suite. Digital RSVPs are submitted through a form on your wedding website. Printed cards work well for all guests regardless of comfort with technology. Digital forms give you faster responses and real-time tracking. Many couples use both.

How far in advance should I send wedding invitations?

For a domestic wedding, six to eight weeks before the wedding date is standard. For a destination wedding or a wedding around a major holiday, eight to twelve weeks gives guests enough time to make travel arrangements.

Can I use a fill-in line instead of checkboxes?

Yes, and some couples prefer it because it feels less clinical. “We hope to see you there” with a fill-in response line is a perfectly valid format. The key is that the card is easy for guests to understand and fill out quickly.

What if guests don’t respond by the deadline?

Plan on it. Budget a few days after your deadline to follow up by phone or text with non-responders. Keep a list of guests you have not heard from and reach out to them directly. It is less fun than watching responses roll in, but a quick call resolves most stragglers.

Engagement Party Invitation FAQs

Who hosts the engagement party?

Engagement parties are often hosted by parents, close friends, family members, or the couple themselves. Modern engagement parties are flexible, and there’s no single right way to host one.

When should you send engagement party invitations?

Most engagement party invitations are sent about 4 to 6 weeks before the celebration. For larger parties or holiday weekends, sending invitations earlier can help guests plan ahead.

Who should be invited to the engagement party?

Typically, engagement party guests include close friends, immediate family, and loved ones who will also be invited to the wedding.

Do engagement party invitations need RSVP information?

Giving a wedding gift should be joyful, not stressful—but if you’re unsure how much to spend, when to send it, or whether you really need to buy something for a destination wedding, you’re not alone. Wedding gift etiquette has changed over the years, and expectations can vary depending on your relationship to the couple, the type of wedding, or even your budget.

Whether you’re a close family member, a plus-one, or just celebrating from afar, this guide answers all your most pressing questions and helps you navigate it all with ease.

Do You Have to Give a Wedding Gift?

Yes, if you’re invited to a wedding, it’s customary to give a gift—even if you can’t attend. The gift serves as a symbol of your support and happiness for the couple’s new life together. If you’re unable to attend, it’s still thoughtful to send something small or personal, even if it’s just a card with a heartfelt note or a digital gift card.

How Much Should You Spend on a Wedding Gift?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, but here’s a general guideline based on your relationship with the couple:

  • Coworkers or distant acquaintances: $50–$75
  • Close friends or extended family: $75–$150
  • Immediate family or very close friends: $150–$250+

That said, your budget is always the most important factor. A thoughtful, meaningful gift that’s within your means will always be appreciated.

Should You Stick to the Couple’s Wedding Registry?

Most couples put a lot of thought into their registry, so shopping from it is the easiest and safest way to choose a gift they’ll truly want. However, you’re not obligated to stick to the list.

If you want to give something more creative, meaningful, or sentimental, going off-registry is completely acceptable—especially if the gift is personal. Custom gifts from Shutterfly, like monogrammed home decor or a photo book documenting their love story, are memorable alternatives that still feel intentional and thoughtful.

Personalized Wedding Gift Ideas

If you’re skipping the registry or looking to add a personal touch, these ideas from Shutterfly make unforgettable gifts the couple will cherish for years to come:

What If the Couple Doesn’t Have a Wedding Registry?

If the couple hasn’t created a registry, don’t panic—it just gives you more freedom to choose something meaningful. In this case, consider gifting cash, a gift card, or a thoughtful item that reflects their interests, lifestyle, or new life together. Think about what would be useful in their home or what would make them feel celebrated. A nice note goes a long way in making your gift feel intentional, even without a registry to guide you.

Is It Okay to Give Cash or a Gift Card?

Absolutely. Many couples prefer cash to help pay for their honeymoon, save for a home, or cover wedding expenses. If they’ve set up a honeymoon fund or registry that allows cash gifts, follow those guidelines. Otherwise, it’s perfectly fine to give cash in a card or a digital gift card with a personal message.

Tip: When giving cash, include a heartfelt note in the wedding card so it still feels personal and celebratory.

When Should You Send or Give a Wedding Gift?

Traditionally, guests had up to a year to send a wedding gift, but modern etiquette encourages sending it closer to the wedding date.

Here’s a recommended timeline:

  • Before the wedding: 1–2 months in advance is ideal.
  • After the wedding: Within 2–3 months is fine, especially for customized gifts.
  • Attending the wedding? Ship the gift to the couple’s home—it’s more convenient for everyone.

Do You Need to Give a Gift If You’re Attending a Destination Wedding?

Yes—but the rules are a little more flexible. If you’re already spending a significant amount on travel, lodging, and time off, the couple may not expect a large gift. In this case, something small, meaningful, or personalized is totally appropriate.

Should You Spend More If You’re Bringing a Plus-One?

Not necessarily. You’re not expected to double your gift amount just because you’re attending with a guest, but it’s thoughtful to slightly increase your budget if you’re close to the couple.

Can You Give a Group Gift?

Definitely. Group gifts are a great idea, especially for pricier items on the couple’s registry or big custom gifts like framed photographs or a luxe personalized photo book. Group gifts work well for friend groups, extended families, or office coworkers.

What If You’re Attending Multiple Wedding Events?

If you’re invited to the engagement party, bridal shower, and wedding itself, it’s a good idea to bring a small gift to each event, with the main gift saved for the wedding.

Here’s a simple breakdown:

Is It Ever Too Late to Send a Wedding Gift?

Nope. Life happens, and couples understand. A belated gift is always better than none. Just include a note acknowledging the timing and expressing your excitement and love for the couple.

Do Bridesmaids and Groomsmen Need to Give a Wedding Gift?

Yes, members of the wedding party are still expected to give a wedding gift. However, it’s understood that being a bridesmaid or groomsman often comes with significant expenses, so the gift doesn’t have to be extravagant. A smaller item from the registry, a group gift with the rest of the wedding party, or something meaningful is more than enough. Many wedding party members also give a personal card or inside joke gift in addition to a formal one, which adds a thoughtful touch without breaking the bank.

Wedding Gift Etiquette Recap: Do’s and Don’ts

DO:

  • Stick to the registry if you’re unsure
  • Send the gift directly to the couple’s home
  • Include a card or personal note with any gift
  • Consider personalized gifts for something unique
  • Respect your budget—thoughtfulness matters most

DON’T:

  • Show up empty-handed without at least a card
  • Bring large gifts to the ceremony or reception
  • Wait too long (aim for within 3 months)
  • Stress about the price—gifts aren’t a competition

When someone you love says “yes,” you want to celebrate it right. Whether you’re heading to an engagement party, sending your congrats from afar, or simply searching for a sweet surprise for the happy couple, finding the perfect engagement gift can feel like a big task. After all, it’s not just about giving something pretty—it’s about choosing something meaningful, personal, and celebratory enough to honor such a joyful milestone.

In this guide, we’re sharing everything you need to know about choosing the best engagement gifts—from etiquette questions to creative and personalized engagement gift ideas that couples will actually cherish.

Do You Need to Bring a Gift to an Engagement Party?

If you’ve been invited to an engagement party, it’s thoughtful—but not mandatory—to bring a gift. Engagement gifts are a sweet way to say “congratulations,” but the pressure is lower than with wedding or bridal shower gifts. A small token of love or a personalized item that reflects the couple’s relationship is always appreciated. If you’re close to the couple or part of the wedding party, it’s more expected that you’ll show up with something special in hand.

How Much Should You Spend on an Engagement Gift?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, and that’s the beauty of it. Spend what feels right for your relationship with the couple and your budget. If you’re a coworker or distant friend, $25–$50 is perfectly acceptable. Close friends and family might spend $50–$100 or more. But remember: a personalized gift or thoughtful keepsake can carry just as much meaning as something pricey.

What Makes a Good Engagement Gift?

The best engagement gifts reflect the couple’s personality, their shared memories, and the excitement of what’s to come. Personalized engagement gifts are always a hit—think custom wall art with their engagement date, or a photo book of their relationship so far. His and hers gifts, home essentials, and festive décor for the big day are all smart choices, too. Most importantly, pick something that celebrates them—and their love story.

Engagement Gift Etiquette Tips

Not sure what the “rules” are when it comes to engagement gift-giving? You’re not alone. Before you pick the perfect present, here are a few quick etiquette tips to keep in mind.

Should You Give the Couple a Joint Gift or Two Individual Gifts?

Joint gifts are the norm—especially since most engagement gifts are meant to celebrate their relationship and life together. Focus on something they can enjoy as a couple, whether it’s home décor, kitchenware, or a shared experience.

What If You Can’t Attend the Party?

If you’re invited but can’t make it, sending a gift isn’t required, but it’s a kind gesture. A small personalized present or even a handwritten card with well wishes goes a long way in showing your excitement for them.

Do You Need to Stick to the Registry?

Most couples don’t create a registry for their engagement party, but if they do, feel free to shop from it. Otherwise, engagement presents are a great opportunity to give something creative, unexpected, or sentimental—like the personalized engagement gifts listed above.

Related Resources on Engagement Gifts

Engagements are a time of joy, excitement, and anticipation—and your gift should reflect all of that. Whether you choose something playful, practical, or deeply sentimental, the best engagement gifts are the ones that celebrate the couple’s love story and help them step into their future together. With personalized options from Shutterfly, you can give a gift that’s as meaningful and unique as their journey ahead.

And let’s not forget about menu cards, which showcase the delectable dishes that await your guests at the reception. From the smallest details to the grandest gestures, wedding stationery plays a vital role in creating a cohesive and memorable experience for both you and your loved ones.
